Nutritional Calculation Disclaimer
All nutritional calculations are estimates based on standard USDA FoodData Central reference values and user inputs. Actual nutrient content may vary depending on brand formulas, food maturity, and preparation methods. Never substitute calculated estimates for medical or clinical nutrition guidance.

How to Calculate Recipe Calories & Macronutrients Accurately
Calculating the nutritional values of home-cooked meals and commercial recipes requires understanding how individual food items, preparation methods, and water weight shifts influence caloric density.
1. The 4-4-9 Atwater System
Standard caloric values are derived using the Atwater energy calculation system: Protein yields 4 kcal per gram, Carbohydrates yield 4 kcal per gram, and Dietary Fats yield 9 kcal per gram. Dietary fiber contains roughly 1.5 to 2 kcal per gram depending on solubility.
2. Raw vs. Cooked Weight Variations
Ingredients either lose water (meat loses ~25% weight during roasting) or gain water (white rice and pasta triple in weight). When calculating recipe nutrition, always use raw ingredient weights for consistency before dividing by total finished portions.
3. Net Carbohydrates vs. Total
Net carbs reflect carbohydrates that are fully digested into blood glucose. To find net carbs, subtract insoluble dietary fiber and non-digestible sugar alcohols from total carbohydrates (Total Carbs − Dietary Fiber = Net Carbs).
Recipe Calorie & Macro Questions
How are recipe calories per serving calculated?
Total recipe calories are calculated by summing the energy values of all raw ingredients according to their weight or volume. Per-serving calories are then determined by dividing the batch total by the number of individual portions produced.
How many calories are in a medium banana?
A standard medium banana (approx. 118 grams) contains approximately 105 calories, 27 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of dietary fiber, 1.3 grams of protein, and 0.3 grams of fat according to USDA nutritional reference standards.
Can I add custom ingredients not listed in the built-in database?
Yes. Select 'Custom Food' or click 'Add Custom Food' to manually enter the food name, quantity, unit, calories, protein, carbs, fat, and fiber from your specific product packaging.
Does cooking alter the calorie content of raw ingredients?
Cooking causes moisture loss or fat absorption, which changes ingredient weight, but total macronutrients and calories remain largely constant unless fat drips away (as in grilling) or is added (as in sautéing).
Are the nutritional values guaranteed to be 100% exact?
The results are calculated estimates based on standardized USDA nutritional datasets and user input. Actual nutritional content may vary based on agricultural produce variations, specific manufacturer brands, and cooking techniques.
